Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels and left back Marcel Schmelzer are sidelined for Saturday’s Bundesliga topper against Bayern Munich and beyond, in the latest major injury blows for the Champions League finalists.

Hummels and Schmelzer injured themselves during Germany’s 1-0 victory in England at Wembley on Tuesday.

Dortmund said on Wednesday that Hummels damaged his heel and is out for the rest of the year. Schmelzer will miss the next three weeks with a calf muscle injury.

It is bad news for Dortmund, who trail leaders Munich by four points ahead of Saturday’s showdown, followed by a crucial Champions League game with Napoli next week.

Hummels is the second regular central defender to be sidelined, as Neven Subotic recently ruptured the cruciate knee ligament and is out for months. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan also remains sidelined.

Munich are without Bastian Schweinsteiger after ankle surgery, while defender Jerome Boateng should be fit despite being substituted at Wembley with a heel problem.
