Borussia Dortmund said on Wednesday they are not looking for revenge going into this Saturday’s German DFL Supercup match against treble winners Bayern Munich, who beat them in the Champions League final.
“There is no revenge. We are not motivating ourselves that we lost the last time,” said Dortmund defender Mats Hummels about the first trophy of the 2013-14 season. “We have a chance to beat Bayern Munich in our stadium.”
Dortmund lost the past two Supercup matches against Munich (2012) and Schalke (2011).
Bayern completed their historic treble last season on May 25 at Wembley by beating Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League final. Since then, Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes left the club and was replaced by coaching star Pep Guardiola.
The coach was not in Dortmund on Wednesday as Bayern were playing a friendly against Guardiola’s former club Barcelona later in the evening.
“Our motivation is no less,” said Bayern sports boss Matthias Sammer.
“Saturday is a final. We want to play well and win. It’s an advertisement for German football when the two top teams of the last couple years face off against each other.”
“The match will be broadcast in 195 FIFA countries, and there are only 2,000 tickets still available,” said Andreas Rettig, executive director of the German Football League (DFL).
Dortmund director of sports Michael Zorc, who won the German title with Dortmund as a player in 1995 and 1996, is expecting a top showdown. “I don’t think either club will play with their B team.”
Zorc called Bayern’s performance in the Telekom Cup tournament “impressive”, after Munich beat Hamburg SV 4-0 and Borussia Moenchengladbach 5-1.
Questionable for the match for Dortmund is new acquisition Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as well as veteran Jakub Blaszczykowski.
