Balwant Singh scored two minutes from time to help defending champion Churchill Brothers hold host Mohun Bagan to a 2-2 draw in an 18th round match of the I-League here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.

Mohun Bagan, which lost by a solitary goal visiting Salgaocar SC in the previous encounter, failed to gain the home advantage as Churchill Brothers made a last-gasp effort to pick up a point.

Shortlived joy

Churchill’s Balwant Singh found the lead in the 36th minute nodding home an assist from Thangjam Singh.

Churchill’s joy was shortlived as its midfielder Alesh Sawant scored an own goal, miscuing an attempted clearance on a back-centre from the Mohun Bangan attacker Katsumi Yusa.

Mohun Bagan went into the lead after the break when its Nigerian striker Christopher Chizoba found the net from the spot.

Bagan earned the penalty in the 57th minute when Chizoba was brought down inside the box by the Churchill goalkeeper Lalit Thapa.

Bagan looked set to claim the full points but Balwant spoiled the host’s party with a fine left-footer that found the target in the 88th minute.

Mohun Bagan tallied 19 points from 17 matches while Churchill Brothers netted 15 points from 16 matches, to continue at the bottom half of the table.

The result: Mohun Bagan 2 (Alesh Sawant 38-og, Christopher Chizoba 57-pen) drew with Churchill Brothers 2 (Balwant Singh 36, 88).
