A 10-man Churchill Brothers defeated local favourite Prayag United SC 2-1 in the eighth round of the I-League at Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday.

Israil Gurung and his second-half substitute Bikramjit Singh found the mark for Churchill Brothers. Bello Rasaq reduced the margin for United SC.

Churchill’s Brazilian playmaker Roberto Mendes Silva (Beto) was ejected following his second booking in the 85th minute but the visitor had gained a 2-0 lead by then.

Away win

Churchill, which beat Shillong Lajong FC 1-0 in the previous round, thus registered its second successive ‘away’ win while taking its tally to 18 points. United SC remained on 14 points.

United’s goalkeeper Subrata Paul failed to clear a cross inside the box and an opportunistic Beto set up Gurung to score in the 26th minute.

In the second half, Bilal Najjarin set a neat back-centre for an onrushing Bikramjit Singh, who found the target with a sharp goal to make it 2-0 for Churchill.

After Beto was sent off following the second booking, United renewed its attack. Bello reduced the margin in the 89th minute tapping home a Ranty Martins cross past Churchill goalkeeper Sandip Nandy.
