Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has joined JSW Sports’ new I-League side, it was announced here on Friday. The Bangalore-based club is yet to be formally named, but the signing of Chhetri, who arrives as a free agent on a two-year deal, represents a huge coup.
“I met the people at JSW a few months ago and the first thing that struck me was the passion behind all the planning. I know I am coming from a champion team, but that works as more motivation here,” Chhetri was quoted as saying.
The 28-year-old striker turned out for Sporting Clube de Portugal’s ‘B’ side last year, where he was frustrated by a lack of opportunities, before joining the eventual I-League champion Churchill Brothers on loan towards the latter part of the season.
“We need to think long term. We are a young team and we wouldn’t want to harbour high hopes. I’m not setting any targets, but I’m sure we can achieve a lot of things if we stick together,” Chhetri added.
