Holders Bayern Munich were handed a match with English champions Manchester United in the Champions League quarter-final draw on Friday.
“We will have to perform well and if we do, then we’ll have a good chance of making the semi-finals,” said Philipp Lahm.
“We can’t be deceived by their current position in the table. They have brilliant players.” Bayern are attempting to become the first team to successfully defend the trophy since AC Milan in 1990. The first leg is in Manchester before the second leg takes place in Munich.
The sides last met in the 2010 quarter-finals, which Bayern won on away goals following a 4—4 aggregate draw.
There was also a famous meeting in the 1999 Champions League final when Manchester United scored twice in injury-time to defeat Munich 2—1.
Real Madrid were drawn at home to Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of the semifinal from last season which was won by Juergen Klopp’s side.
Dortmund dominated Real 4—1 in the home leg of that clash before clinging on to lose only 2—0 away and reach the final.
“Madrid has become even stronger personnel—wise in comparison to last season,” said Dortmund sport director Michael Zorc told the club website. “But maybe in the back the players’ minds are the games from the previous year.” The draw made at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, also produced an all Spanish clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
The pair have never met in European competition and are presently locked involved in a three-way battle, along with Real Madrid, for the Spanish title.
In the final tie Paris St Germain look to prove their credentials as a European force when taking on Chelsea.
The two have been drawn together only once before, in the 2004 Champions League group stage. Chelsea won in Paris and the London fixture was goalless.
First-leg matches will be played on April 1—2 with the return matches are on April 8—9.
The final is in Lisbon on May 24.
