Bhutia picks Germany as the favourite

June 24, 2014 11:45 pm | Updated 11:45 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The 2014 World Cup has thrown up some surprising results so far and former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia believes the best thing about the tournament is the fact that there are no whipping boys in world football any more.

He also feels that, given the impressive performances by some of the smaller teams in the fray, India has a long way to go and lot to do before thinking of qualifying for the event.

Terming it as a ‘tournament of upsets’ so far, Bhutia picked Germany as his favourite team to lift the title. “It has been a fantastic World Cup, with smaller teams giving tough competition and causing big upsets. At the same time, the event is happening in South America, so European teams were bound to struggle in the hot and humid weather conditions. “Having said that, I didn’t expect Spain to make a first-round exit, nobody did,” Bhutia said.
