Wolfsburg goalkeeper and team captain Diego Benaglio has agreed to a contract extension until 2016.

German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and Diego Benaglio concluded their talks to extend the goalkeepers expiring contract until 2016 with an option for another year, reports Xinhua.

“I have said all along that Wolfsburg is my club and that I want to stay in here on long term. I am absolutely delighted to be playing here for at least three years,” Benaglio said in an official statement.

The 29-year-old Swiss international goalkeeper made 143 appearances wearing the Wolfsburg outfit. He is part of the “Schweizer Nati”, the Swiss national team, since 2006 to make 48 caps.

“Diego Benaglio is a leader within our team. It’s an important signal that he wants to continue that important role in the future,” Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking said on the clubs official homepage.

Wolfsburg sits at 12th position with 22 points after 18 rounds of Bundesliga.
