Mohun Bagan downed table-topper Salgaocar SC 2-1 to notch up its first win of the I-League football, in a sixth round encounter at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Wednesday.

With striker Okolie Odafa still injured, Bagan found the goals through C.S. Sabeeth and Katsumi Yusa. Salgaocar pulled one back in the dying minutes through Scottish striker Daryl Duffy through a penalty.

The barren first session saw both sides fail to get their attacks in place. Mohun Bagan saw one effort from striker Eric Muranda going wide in the first quarter while Duffy failed to reach the ball on time to deny the visitor an early opportunity.

Bagan took the lead 10 minutes into the second session when midfielder Denson Devadas floated the ball into the box for Sabeeth to tap it over the approaching Salgaocar custodian Karanjit Singh.

Bagan found the insurance goal in the 76th when Katsumi finished with a spectacular effort.

Bagan will be playing the next match without Devadas, who picked two yellow cards in three minutes and was ordered off in injury-time (90+2 minutes).

Bagan now has five points from five matches to be in ninth position while Salgaocar, which suffered its first loss, fell from the top spot tallying 10 from five matches.

The result: Mohun Bagan 2 (C.S. Sabeeth 55, Katsumi Yusa 76) bt Salgaocar SC 1 (Daryl Duffy 90-pen).
