Santosh Kashyap, who assumed the responsibility of the beleaguered Mohun Bagan at the start of the season, resigned on Saturday “taking responsibility for the team’s below average performance in the current season.”
The coach’s resignation was announced in a brief statement issued by the club. Kashyap had taken over with a lot of fanfare as Mohun Bagan, inspired by the coach’s success with Air India, hoped to end two seasons of title drought.
Kashyap’s resignation came after Bagan lost its second successive I-League match, against Prayag United SC, on Friday.
Taking over from the previous seasons’ combine of Subrata Bhattacharya (technical director) and Prasanta Banerjee (coach), Kashyap became the seventh coach to resign after Moroccan Karim Bencherifa’s unceremonious departure in early 2010.
“I take full responsibility for the team’s poor start to the season. A few players were injured and we also missed chances in some crucial matches,” Kashyap told reporters after the news of his resignation was made public.
Mohun Bagan has started looking for a new coach, which is likely to be announced within the two week-rest period before its next I-League match.
