Ghana star midfielder has been ruled out of the World Cup finals, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said on Thursday.
The Chelsea player picked up an injury playing for his country at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year and has since not played, but it was hoped that he would recover in time for the June 11-July 11 finals.
The GFA said that Essien had been evaluated by a combined team of GFA and Chelsea medical experts. “These revealed that Essien will not make full recovery until the end of July.” In a statement the GFA said that they wished him a full recovery and a quick return to football action.
Essien was a member of the 2006 Black Stars squad at the World Cup. Ghana will face Germany, Serbia and Australia in Group D at the finals.
