Bayer Leverkusen have signed Spain under-19 European champion Daniel Carvajal from Real Madrid, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old right-back joins Leverkusen on a five-year contract, the club said.

Carvajal won an under-19 European Championship medal with Spain last year and has come through Real’s youth ranks.

No further transfer details were given.

Leverkusen sports director Rudi Voeller said Carvajal was a key signing for the club, which is seeking to improve on a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, which has qualified them for the Europa League.

“He has great class on the ball, has enormous qualities going forward and will develop further with us,” Voeller said.
