West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka is considering whether to appeal against his five-match ban for a controversial goal celebration.

The Football Association banned the Frenchman for five matches and fined him £80,000 ($1,33,600) for his “quenelle” gesture, which critics say is an “inverted Nazi salute”.

Anelka denies the gesture was anti-Semitic but he will now await the full findings of the FA report before deciding whether to appeal.

But West Brom decided not to wait for any appeal and immediately banned Anelka themselves.

“Upon both charges being proven, the club has suspended Nicolas Anelka pending the conclusion of the FA’s disciplinary process and the club’s own internal investigation,” West Brom said in a statement.

West Brom said it could not “ignore the offence that his actions have caused, particularly to the Jewish community, nor the potential damage to the club’s reputation”.

Anelka has one week from receiving the full reasoning from the FA to decide on an appeal.

The Frenchman must also undergo an education programme as part of the punishment.
