Kuwait shooter Fehaid al-Deehani, competing as one of the nine Independent Olympic Athletes (IOA), won men’s double trap gold on Wednesday.

Al-Deehani, bronze medallist in Sydney and London, was forced to take part as a neutral as Kuwait is suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over government interference in sport.

Ning gets her revenge

China’s Ding Ning beat teammate and defending champion Li Xiaoxia 11-9, 5-11, 14-12, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 to win the gold in the women’s singles table tennis on Wednesday.

Golden retirement

In cycling, Fabian Cancellara ensured his retirement at the end of the year would be golden by reclaiming the time-trial title.

Japan judokas on top

Mashu Baker and Haruka Tachimoto made it a golden double for Japan in judo.

Tachimoto stunned three-time world champion Yuri Alvear of Colombia to win the women’s 73kg title before Baker edged out Varlam Liparteliani of Georgia in the men’s 90kg.

Kazakh’s new world mark

Kazakhstan’s Nijat Rahimov, who had served a two-year doping ban, smashed the clean and jerk world record by four kilogrammes to stun Chinese superstar Lyu Xiaojun and grab Olympic gold in the men’s 77kg weightlifting contest.

Rahimov lifted 214 kg to add to his snatch score of 165, making a combined total of 379. — Agencies
