Minutes away from kick-off!

Time for the National Anthems. A very serious looking England team, as the crowd sings 'God Save the Queen'. Time for Star Spangled Banner. An equally serious Team USA. Lighten up chaps, it's just THE most important event your sporting careers!

And we're off! Action has begun!

Nervy first couple of minutes for both teams. Understandable, given the significance of this match.

4th minute: England scores!!!! Steven Gerrard gives England the lead. A lovely pass from Emile Heskey - playing a holding role - to Gerrard, who pokes the ball past the 'keeper into the net with the outside of his right foot. "Was the US defence sleeping?", asks the commentator.

Tim Howard is furious. Why wouldn't he be? Not the best piece of defensive work from USA.

11th minute: First real chance for U.S. Dempsey displays neat air time to head a cross towards goal. Easy save for 'keeper Green though. Dempsey did well to make an effort of that one.

13th minute: Three back-to-back corners for the U.S. Nothing constructive comes off it though.

Sedate few minutes. But the U.S. have stepped up their game and are applying pressure on the England defence.

18th minute: Lovely cross from Donovan, but Altidore misses an easy header. Should have got that one on target at the very least. Capello is not a happy man on the sidelines.

20th minute: From the right, Lennon tries to find Rooney with a great ball. But it finds a U.S. defender whose half-hearted clearence falls for Rooney. He tries to hit a spectacular bicycle kick but it's a tame effort which Howard holds.

27th minute: Milner goes into the book for a challenge. He protests, but to no avail. First yellow card of the match.

29th minute: Johnson sends in a low cross from the right, Howard just about gets to it, but stays down after a collision with Heskey.

Tim Howard looks in pain. Heskey's foot crashed into Howard's chest. Unintentional from Heskey, he was clearly going for the ball.

32nd minute: Wright-Phillips replaces Milner. First substituition of the match.

33rd minute: Altidore takes a snap shot from 30 yeards out, all along the ground, Green collects it easily.

Although England has the goal, USA has the lion's share of possession. 59 to 41.

38th minute: Wright-Phillips has a go at goal from way out. A wee bit ambitious. Doesn't trouble the 'keeper.

39th minute: Donovan winds up and has a crack from outisde the box. Just off target, though Green looked like he had his goal covered.

41st minute: USA score!!! England's goalkeeping horror show continues. Dempsey's 25 yard drive along the carpet is fumbled by Robert Green and it rolls into the net. That was an absolute howler! The easiest of takes for Green, costly fumble.

Capello looks on, not amused one bit. Got to feel for ol' Green. He is going to take a lot of stick for this one, be sure about that.

45 minutes: 3 minutes time added on.

Half-time: 1-1

This match had been billed as England's toughest group match-up and it has lived up to the billing , given the evidence of the first-half. After Gerrard put England in front very early in the piece, USA has responded, and admirably at that. Dempsey's goal, albeit through a goalkeeping howler, is just reward for the work put in by the Americans.

Green will do well to forget the first half and concentrate on the job ahead. Meanwhile, read what >Kevin McCarra of the Guardian had to say about Robert Green prior to the World Cup.

Talking of howlers, I've had a couple myself (read typos). Quickly corrected, of course...

Players are back on the field. Time for action..

2nd change for England. Carragher comes in for King. Like for like swap.

48th minute: Demerit goes into the book. Yellow card.

49th minute: Lennon breaks away on the right and cuts deep into enemy territory. Pulls the ball back but no white shirts to receive it. Great pace and skill from Lennon.

51st minute: Dempsey down, England play on, but he's back up on his feet.

52nd minute: Heskey played in by a precise pass by Lennon, but drives it straight into the keeper's hand. Should have scored.Great chance there for the striker. The finish was quite ordinary, Howard would be relieved he didn't have to do much with that save.

60th minute: Terry tackles Bradley and receives a yellow for his troubles.

61st minute: Hello! Another yellow for England. Gerrard this time, for a high boot.

62nd minute: Free kick taken by Donovan, beats the wall, but Bocanegra heads it wide.

63rd minute: Lampard, from 20 yards, hits a rasping drive but Howard palms it behind. Nice save!

65th minute: Altidore, with a sharp burst of pace, leaves Carragher for dead and shoots from inside the box which is saved by Green, the rebound rattles off the bar.

66th minute: Referee sends Johnson off the field. Cant play with a bleeding lip can you? Off you go.

68th minute: From 27 metres out, Lampard lines up a free-kick. But he launches it into orbit. He has been very annonymous till now, the Chelsea man.

71st minute: Gerrard puts in a teasing cross from the right and finds the head of Rooney, whose hurried header goes wide.

72nd minute: 6th yellow card of the match, Finley for the clip on Gerard's ankle.

75th minute: Rooney thinks of shooting from the edge of the area before passing it to an rushing Wright-Phillips. His shot is turned behind by Howard.

76th minute: Cross from Gerard, Heskey heads over the bar!

77th minute: Edson Buddle on for Findley.

79th minute: Crouch on for Heskey, more of an aerial threat.

80th minute: Crouch immediately gets his head on a Rooney cross, tamely falls at the feet of Howard though.

83rd minute: Breaks on for England, 4 on 2, Lennon's cross finds Lampard, but he's all tangled up and it rolls harmlessly to Howard.

Could we have a last minute hero? Who wants to be superstar with a late goal?

Final few seconds of regulation time...

3 minutes added time

91st minute: Bradley finds Holden in space on the right side, but the cross blocked out for a corner. Pressure on England mounts.

That's it! Game over. 1-1 draw it is.

An evenly contested game where both teams went all-out before settling for a share of the points. Altidore's raw power with Dempsey's clever trickery created problems, but England fashioned several chances of their own.

For the USA, they will take lot of heart from this game and will be looking forward to facing the lesser lights of the group - Algeria and Slovenia.

Capello did say before this match that he did not want to lose, so this result will not disappoint him too much. As mentioned, the other two teams in the group aren't as strong, so both England and USA will be fairly satisfied with this draw.

Right, hope you enjoyed the game. I know there are a lot of England fans out there, and I'm sure they wont be mighty pleased with a certain Robert Green. If England qualify, all will be forgotten. For Green's sake, let's hope they do.
