The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s last working committee meeting before next month’s annual general meeting will be held here on Sunday.
The agenda for the emergent meeting contains 12 items, but the issue that has raised the most curiosity is whether N. Srinivasan will chair it or whether it will be veteran administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya, who has been standing in for the elected Board president since June 2.
If the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s sources are to be believed, Srinivasan will be in chair when the meeting gets underway at noon on Sunday. Secretary Sanjay Patel and treasurer Ravi Savant have also hinted that Srinivasan will attend the meeting.
Stepped aside
Elected for a two-year-term in 2011, Srinivasan stepped aside on the advice of a handful of senior members so a BCCI-appointed inquiry committee could conduct a probe into the alleged spot-fixing and betting charges against Chennai Super Kings, Gurunath Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals and Raj Kundra.
Later the Bombay High Court, following a PIL filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), observed that the Board’s two-man panel was unconstitutional. Both the BCCI and the CAB have taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
The resignation of secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke, soon after the alleged involvement of Meiyappan, Srinivasan’s son-in-law, became public, not only put the Board in a severe fix but also left the administration in limbo before Patel and Savant came in to run the day-to-day affairs.
The date of the annual general meeting, which, according to the Board’s by-laws, has to be held by September 30, will be a key issue of discussion in Sunday’s working committee meeting.
The meeting is emergent because it was called on August 27. The notice period for a normal working committee meeting is 14 days.
An emergent meeting can be called with a notice period of three days.
The secretary’s report and the audited accounts, signed by the president, secretary and treasurer, are to be approved along with other reports submitted by the sub-committees. More importantly, the members will get a hint of the substantial subsidy they are likely to receive from the money earned from media rights and the IPL.
Things have not been smooth for the Board since the conclusion of IPL-6. On Sunday, the BCCI will have to handle matters with purpose and decisiveness.
