Noted television commentator Alan Wilkins on Thursday said that covering the 2002 US Open tennis, a year after the 9/11 tragedy, was the most difficult moment for him as a professional.
At the launch of his autobiography, Easier said than done , Wilkins said the setting created in memory of the incident led to a sombre atmosphere.
“The flag of the World Trade Centre was torn, tattered and burnt. They unfurled the flag on the court and let off doves. We wondered what to say. It was the most emotional moment of my commentating career,” said Wilkins in the presence of noted cricketers Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Michael Slater and Tom Moody.
Ganguly, who had a short stint as a commentator, agreed that “it’s never easy to keep one’s emotions out” while commentating.
Slater and Moody said they learnt a lot from Wilkins about the art. “It was fun to work with him. The title of the book is so apt,” said Slater. Moody added, “He (Alan) is a great educator.”
Laxman, who also holds the mike on television, said, “Alan is always there to help others. Only a good-natured person can share his knowledge.”
