Watson in Australia squad for second Test

Shane Watson has been included in Australia’s 13-man squad for the second Test against South Africa, with selectors to assess his fitness next week before announcing a starting XI.

Vice-captain Watson missed the drawn series-opener in Brisbane this week due to a calf muscle injury, and early indications were that he’d only be selected for the Adelaide Test if he was fit enough to bat and bowl.

National selector John Inverarity announced the squad on Friday in Perth, saying Watson “Remains under an injury cloud and we will make a decision by Wednesday.”

The second Test starts on Thursday. Rob Quiney, who made his debut in Brisbane after Watson’s late withdrawal, and left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc, who was 12th man in the first Test, were both retained in the squad.
