Former South African fast bowling great Allan Donald believes that Tim Southee has the potential to be the best swing bowler in the world. Well, this 23-year-old New Zealander is looking up to the two-match Test series against India (starting here from August 23) as part of the challenge to live up to those expectations.
“That was a huge compliment from such a great cricketer. Yes, I have a long way to go and this Indian tour should be a big learning experience if I am to realise my dream of moving into the elite club of the worlds best fast bowlers,” said Southee, who also has the ability to play cameo knocks down the order.
“It has always been a challenge for any fast bowler to do well in Indian conditions. And, given the fact that the home team has a formidable batting line-up, there is no room for any error,” said Southee.
The Kiwi had made an impressive Test debut at 19 with bowling figures of five for 55 and a quick-fire 40-ball 77 with four fours and nine sixes.
“We are prepared for big battles on this tour. We have our own plans. The Indians may miss the experience of Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman.
“But we cannot be complacent since there is still lot of exciting talent in Indian batting,” added Southee. “I think the key to be successful on these sub-continent pitches is to be patient, stick to basics and be always on spot.”
Southee had a remarkable 2011 World Cup picking up 18 wickets. “I am familiar with the conditions here, having toured earlier. I am aware of the responsibility,” added the Kiwi fast bowler who has taken 45 wickets from 18 Tests since his debut four years ago.
“It is going to be a very tough tour and we are happy with the preparations ahead of the Test series,” he said.
