Hailing India’s sensational World Cup triumph last night as a great team effort, chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth on Sunday said Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men defeated all the top teams in the mega-event to prove themselves the best.
“It’s a great team effort, a superb effort by the boys.
Don’t forget they had beaten all the big teams. That shows India is clearly the best team in the world,” the former India captain told PTI a day after Dhoni’s warriors vanquished Sri Lanka by six wickets in the Cup final here.
According to the former opener, the brilliant display by the Indian squad showed what a good combination of talent can achieve.
“It’s a question of how to combine a strong batting line up backed up by good bowling and fielding. It can do wonders.
It’s a great effort by the boys,” he said.
According to the Chennai-based member of the 1983 Cup-winning squad under Kapil Dev, the current team’s biggest asset is their ability to come back from the dead in all forms of the game.
“I have always said the greatest thing about this team is they have been able to come back from difficult situations often, even from the brink at times, and win matches in both Tests and ODIs — from no—win situations.”
Srikkanth paid glowing tributes to the match-winning innings of 91 not out by skipper Dhoni in yesterday’s summit clash at the Wankhede Stadium, as well as the contributions by the other members.
