Bangladesh’s Mominul Haque struck an unbeaten 100 as his side ended with a draw against Sri Lanka on the fifth day of the second test.
After Haque completed his third century, the two captains decided to call a draw with 14 overs to spare. Bangladesh had reached 271-3 when the decision was made.
But Sri Lanka clinched the series 1-0 as it won the first test at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
Shakib Al Hasan was unbeaten on 43, while Shamsur Rahman made 45 and Tamim Iqbal contributed 31.
Sri Lanka started their final bid to push for a win in the final session but Haque and Al Hasan denied them any breakthrough. The former looked nervous as he stood on the brink of his the century. After several tense moments, he finally reached the 100-run mark with a single off Nuwan Pradeep.
Dilruwan Perera ended with 2-55 while Kithuruwan Vithanage had a figure of 1-73.
Sri Lanka set a huge target of 467, having accumulated two big scores thanks chiefly to Kumar Sangakkara, who became only the second man in test history to score a triple-century and a century in the same game.
On a testing fifth-day pitch, Haque prospered with a combination of controlled aggression and determination. Sri Lanka’s bowlers tested his skill peppering a barrage of bouncers, some of which struck his body.
A flighted delivery off Vithanage got extra bounce and took the outside edge of Haque’s bat, but it was dropped at slip when he was on 64.
In total, Haque hit 11 boundaries on route to his 100, which was his third century in his last four tests. This was also the third century by a Bangladeshi batsman in the test after Rahman and Kayes hit their maiden centuries in the first innings.
Iqbal and Rahman saw off the new ball in the first session earlier and offered a 71-run partnership.
Sri Lankan bowlers utilized the rough of the pitch to good effect removing the openers.
The second test was also notable for Sri Lanka’s Sangakkara, who hit a quick 105 on the fourth day to achieve the rare feat of scoring a triple century and a century in the same test.
They were his 34th and 35th test centuries. They were also his sixth and seventh centuries against Bangladesh, the most the team has conceded to one player.
With his new record, Sangakkara joined an exclusive club with Graham Gooch, who scored 333 and 123 against India at Lord’s in 1990.
