R. Ashwin has been named in India’s 15-member cricket World Cup squad announced by the BCCI in Chennai on Monday.

The national selectors, who met for one and half hours to finalise the team here, picked up three specialist spinners including Tamil Nadu spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla

Young batsman Rohit Sharma and pacer S. Sreesanth were on Monday omitted from India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming cricket World Cup to be held in the sub-continent from February 19.

Tamil Nadu spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla were named in the squad to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and which includes most of the star players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

The national selectors, who met for one and half hours to finalise the team here, picked three specialist spinners considering that the high-profile event will be held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Praveen Kumar, who are nursing injuries and have been ruled out of the ongoing one-day series against South Africa, have been included in the squad announced by BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan.

Left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel, who were among the front-runners to make the cut, failed to find a berth.

India’s World Cup squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla.

Whatever We support India. The choice between Virat / Yusuf / Rohit - it was obvious that Virat and Yusuf showed much better performance. Then between Ohja / Chawla, well both are talented. Maybe they wanted some variety and then a bit of more batting down the order. Sreesanth / Munaf: Munaf's line and length has been good in SA series and even in the appearance before. Ashwin /another pacer: its happening in India so an additional spinner.

we all are very confused y the selecters pick piyush , nehra and munaf.sreeshanth has some nervous problem we all r admit it but dont forget one thing he is a match winner player.he can easily change the direction of a match .dont forget the semifinal match of 20 20 and the test series in southafrica.he picked the wicket of kallis in test match thats the only reason for the indain wins.

I am surprised at comments Questioning the selection leaving Rohit Sharma? Hi Performance is self- explanatory..... Also How can Sreeshanth and Ishanth Sharma replace Ashwin and Chawla. Agreed Chawla has not played international cricket for a while but Chawla adds brings the leg spin option, will be handy in Indian conditions. I wonder the questioning on Ashwin's selection. Let us not worry about players from a state not being selected. We have an optimal team in place

Dhoni is a big politician and should contest from his constituency. His performance is very much below par. Sreesanth has proved his ability to take wickets on any surface and surely is a match winner. Dhoni is having a bunch of friends whom he doesn't want to leave as well as he listens to Chennai Super Kings bosses to please theme for the money he takes.

It is sad to see even MSD and selectors going behind the old trend of selecting their pets rather than the performers. Let's wait and see. They will end up calling back S.Sreesanth, Pragyan Ohja and Rohit Sharma soon as the current team is an 'injury' team rather than a World Cup team.

Munaf, Nehra, Piyush dont deserve to be in. The lethargy of Nehra and Munaf will be a burden to the team. Piyush has not seen performing for a long time, strange he got in. Rohit is the most talented cricketer after Sehwag & Sachin; neverthless he was omitted. Why? Why has Ishant Sharma has been omitted? Dhoni's accomplices are the current team. They will never win the Cup. It's a cup for Shane watson this time. No doubt. let the proffessionals take it, not politicians.

Sree's figures of last two games are way better than Nehra's 66 runs from 6 overs. Sree took 7 wickets from last two games and judging by the way Munaf fields he should play some 1st class cricket.

I am shocked about the selection of indian team how they leave a bowler who recently bowled his heart in South Africa. Mr Dhoni has forgetten so easily it was Shreesanth who brought the win in India's way by taking Kallis's wicket and he is the bowler who is inform right now. I think Dhoni is not looking for the good players instead he want his friends to be with him. Except Rahul Dravid this is the same team that lost shamefuly in 2007 world cup. Mr Shrikant need think about Robin Uathapaa, Shreesanth and of Rohit Sharma. these players are match winners.

Omitting Sreesanth from this side is going to hitback MSD's gameplan for sure! We will see Munaf Patel and Zaheer Khan going to be in the injury side as the World cup progresses. Even in South Africa you can see that there is no support from MSD to his pacer. None of the Indian Captians had criticised like MSD on Sreesanth after his excellent bowling in South Africa, in the same day's press conference, which made the fellow pacer into depression which we can see when he comes back to bowl in the second innings of the 3rd test, which resulted in a draw. So personally, MSD don't like to have Sreesanth on team. Anyhow it's good for Sreesanth to be not in this team.

Selection is good but one spare keeper is required to help Dhoni..All the best for India!

Good team and whole team will be replaced for next world cup, except Sehwag.

I am shocked about the selection of indian team. How can they leave Pragyan Ojha and take Piyush Chawla who has not played any ODI's for the past 2 years and they might have included Rohit Sharma in the squad instead of taking R.Ashwin as reserve player. It was very hasty decision from slection committee chief Srikanth.

R.Ashwin and Piyush Chawla are surprise selections ahead of the likes of S.Sreesanth, Pragyan Ohja and Rohit Sharma. Our selectors have this habit of adding a surprise. How is it justified to have a bowler like Piyush Chawla who has not played for so long to come into a tournament like the World Cup directly without match practice? R. Ashwin doesn't have the experience to handle a big situation yet. If this was the thought to have more spinners in the team for the world cup, why not give them some match practice in South Africa? I still don't understand the wisdom of the selectors when they plan a tour to South Africa before a World Cup in the Indian subcontinent where the playing conditions are completely different. The same thing happened before the last World Cup. Surely Pragyan Ohja and Rohit Sharma would have been a much better choice especially given the batting abilities of Rohit. Anyhow, let's wish the team best of luck and may they be the winners of this edition of the World Cup.

I feel this is the best team picked by the selectors. However talking about Sreesanth - he becomes nervous after he is hit and removes agression and due to this he losses his line and length.

Its a good decision from selector as they picked three specialist spinner to balance the Indian squad. We all know match will be played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh so the pitches are flat and it will help specially spinners.Ashwin and Chawla are good spinners , there is no need of evidence. Youngster Kohli, Raina and Pathan are in superb form. Sachin will play his last WC so he will give every effort to win the match and lets see how Dhoni's luck works.

The selection committee has done a good job by selecting the best players from pool. But they should have selected Sreesanth instead of Praveen Kumar considering his outstanding form for the last six months. The selection committee could have gone for Partiv Patel as reserved wicket keeper instead of a third spinner Piyush Chawla, who has not played one days for years. So all the best team India.

It seems players have been selected based on their 'reputation' and not 'form'. Otherwise, what could justify the inclusion of Yuvraj and Raina? Piyush Chawla last played an ODI for India in Feb 2008. He has been selected to such a mega-event without being seen in action in an ODI for the past 3 years. This is ridiculous to the core.

Sreesanth and Isanth both are dropped. Why? Is there no role for spacer?

The selectors have rightly chosen the third spinner considering the conditions... a good challenge for Indian batsmen in their own den..The gamble perfectly suits India if it has to be world champion....

Apart from Rohit sharma, biggest surprise is Piyush Chawla. I could not recollect any recent match winning (or even match playing) performance of Piyush. On what basis selection committee justified inclusion of Piyush and eliminating Pragyan Ojha or Amit Sharma. Will there be anyone to address public on selection criteria?
