Faf du Plessis’ unbeaten half-century led a strong reply by South Africa after it had bowled the West Indies out for 329 on day two of the third and final Test at Newlands on Saturday.
Du Plessis went to tea on 51 not out while Hashim Amla was unbeaten on 16 as South Africa reached 135-2.
Jermaine Blackwood reached his fifty at the start of the day and top-scored for the West Indies with 56, before Dale Steyn picked up two of the four remaining West Indian wickets to record figures of 4-78.
Alviro Petersen’s 42 then gave South Africa a positive start to its innings before he was run out midway through the second session.
