Five-time World Cupper Charlotte Edwards faced defeat in her first match leading England in ICC Women’s World Cup 2013.

Asked about Sri Lanka going over the line, chasing 238, she said: “They have a couple of good batters, all of them came good today.”

The match-up pitting a three-time champion team against a qualifier appeared a mismatch.

The fact that England lost by one wicket off the last ball after putting up 238 in a 50-over competition will hurt, considering the Lankan track record in World Cup play so far.

“I think we did well to get to 238. We slipped towards the end. From the outside looking inside, it looks a huge upset. I have been to Sri Lanka a couple of times and it does not surprise me the way they played,” reacted the England skipper, facing the tough task of rousing her teammates for the group matches against India and the West Indies.

Three of the four teams will advance to the Super Six stage.
