Ready for the ride: Ravi Shastri, who had not responded to the initial advertisement, has had a change of mind.

Ravi Shastri has decided to give a shot at the post of Team India Head Coach. He will apply before the July 9 deadline.

The former India captain was appointed Team Director of the national team from the ODI series in England in 2014; he was part of the national team till the ICC World Twenty 20 hosted by India in early 2016.

Shastri's name has figured as a strong candidate for the post once Anil Kumble decided to quit at the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy in England.

Shastri had not responded to the BCCI advertisement inviting applications for the position on May 25. Once Kumble announced his decision to withdraw from the team, the BCCI extended the deadline of its to July 9 and exempted candidates who had responded to the first advertisement from applying again.

Shastri initially worked with Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher, but after the ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2015, he led the coaching staff of the team.

He and Kohli developed a good rapport, the reason why it's speculated the India captain is reported to have suggested to the BCCI that Shastri may be considered.

Those who responded to the first advertisement are Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh and Craig McDermott.
