The second day’s play of the Ranji Trophy group ‘B’ match between last year’s runner-up Tamil Nadu and the host Odisha at the Dhanaswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (DRIEMS) was abandoned owing to unplayable ground conditions near here on Saturday.

The umpires, after inspecting the pitch and outfield, decided to call off the day’s play at 11.45 a.m. Overnight rain which started at around 8 p.m. on Friday continued till this morning till about 9 a.m.

The four-pitch square was under cover and looked unaffected by the water that had gathered around the square.

However, the bowlers’ run-up on either side was sodden so was a major portion of the outfield.

Tamil Nadu, aiming to snatch full points from this game, ought to be disappointed. After the game was called off, coach V.B. Chandrasekhar and captain Lakshmipathy Balaji, along with match officials and Odisha coach Debasis Mohanty went to check on the pitch and outfield.

When asked how much disappointed he was in not getting a full game, the Tamil Nadu skipper said, “we have been missing out on one or two games every year owing to rain.”

With two days left of the match, a timely start on the third day will perhaps give Tamil Nadu a chance to go for the first innings lead unless something dramatic happens.

When asked about his feeling in not having a full game, Odisha coach Mohanty said, “What one can do if the elements interfere? It was good that we had a match against TN and a good showing would have given our boys the much needed confidence ahead of the long season.”
