Who is Ravi Kumar? If this query is posed even to those familiar with cricket in Hyderabad, most will say they do not know.
The reason is that he has not yet made it big. But his performances his season indicate that he has the potential to do so in the near future.
He has become the first batsman in the HCA league championship to cross the 1000-run mark this season while playing for New Blues CC in the A-Division (two-day) format.
The opening batsman has scored two double centuries (298 and 212) besides two centuries so far in just eight matches with an average of about 130.
Dr. M. V. Sridhar, HCA secretary, has stated recently that only performances will be the criterion for selection and nothing else. If that is the case Ravi should be a sure bet for a place in the state side. For his part, Ravi is focused on the game. “I will just keep scoring and leave the rest to the fate,” he says.
Coached by Ashok Singh, who is also the personal coach of Test star V.V.S. Laxman, this dashing opener is known for his big-hitting and big scores too. Among his feats are a half-century off just 11 balls in the All India Pepsi Cup early this year.
Ravi’s strength is his confidence. And, he complements that with wonderful array of strokes right from the word go. In 2002, he scored a double century for Methodist Junior College in the Parle-G Trophy and in the next season scored an aggregate of 723 runs for Vimco with three centuries and four 50s.
He has also scored 680 runs for SBI including a double ton and five half centuries. His critics may claim however that his 1000 runs this season have come on matting wickets. But this was beyond his control since this format is played only on matting wickets. That he happens to be the only one to cross 1000 this season so far is what makes him special.
