Railways crushes Bengal

Railways crushed host Bengal by 122 runs in its concluding group-A league match of the Ranji Trophy at the Jadavpur University 2nd campus on Tuesday.

The Railways bowling came good yet again as it consumed the Bengal batting well short of the target. Mediumpacer Anureet Singh and leg-spinner Karan Sharma lent balance to the visitor’s attack and inflicted most of the damage on the host, whose second innings folded up at 249 runs while chasing a target of 372.

Anureet picked up four wickets to rattle Bengal’s lower order and precipitate the host’s journey to defeat. Sharma inflicted the damage in the Bengal middle order while the captain Sanjay Bangar, who later announced his retirement from first-class cricket, picked up two wickets. This was Bengal’s fourth outright defeat, which was the most conceded by any team in the nine-team group.

Bengal tallied 13 points and was lucky to preserve its position in group-A, above Rajasthan (11) and Hyderabad (10). The win did not help Railways either as the team finished fifth with 21 points and missed the knockout grade.

Beginning on the overnight score of 13 for one, Bengal lost Sudip Chatterjee early when the left-hander edged one to Shivkanth Shukla at second slip off Anureet. Opener Arindam Das (40) faltered again after a good start as he was trapped leg-before by Bangar.

Debutant Sandipan Das was the only Bengal batsman who applied himself well. He scored 62 (144b, 4x9) and shared a 50-run partnership with Debabrata Das for the sixth wicket. Das made a quick-fire 44 off 55 balls and took the Bengal innings some distance.
