Cricketers Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell, who were detained by the police in an alleged rave party here in May, have tested positive for drugs. The police received the last batch of medical reports on Friday.
90 detained
“A total of 90 persons were detained by us during the raid. We had received the report on 46 persons and a report on the remaining 44 persons was received today. Of the 90, 86 have tested positive while two males and two females have tested negative,” Vishwas Nangre-Patil, Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region), told The Hindu on Friday.
While Rahul Sharma is accompanying the Indian cricket team for the limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka, Wayne Parnell is in South Africa, informed sources said.
Of the 90, 38 were women and 52 men.
Giving the break-up of those who tested positive, police said that of the 42, three tested positive for cocaine and cannabis, 35 tested positive for only cannabis and four tested positive for cannabis and MDMA. “Eighteen have tested positive for alcohol,” a police official said.
All of them will be booked under Section 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for consumption of drugs.
Under Section 64, thosefound to have consumed drugs for the first time could be sent for rehabilitation and de-addiction.
Urine and blood samples of all the detained persons were sent to the city’s Cooper Hospital, Bhabha Hospital and Sir J J Hospital on May 21 after the police raided Hotel Oakwood on May 20 and busted a sun-down party on the suspicion that it was a rave party.

Too much money, and too early...plus the non-cricket activities off the field which is now a part & parcel of cricket, especially the IPL....are at the root of the problem. Young people can get carried away. They are not the only ones to be blamed. It is the people and the system which lure the young men into these sort of things are to be blamed. I have always felt that IPL will destroy Indian cricket. Stop it till further damage is done. Agree with Sourav Ganguly's comment that he may be punished, but not banned for ever from the Indian team.
Good job Mumbai Police ! Especially Vishwas Patil.
BCCI need to show zero tolerance to drug abuse. Need to send a firm message to society by putting end to this drug addict boy's career.
