Sporting a new look, Gautam Gambhir is more confident about his personality. It may be a matter of coincidence that the Delhi opener batted with authority in the Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 North Zone cricket tournament to regain his touch just before the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
However, Gambhir knows that patience plays a key role during the stay at the crease and away from it.
Living in the presentSo, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain is focused on the job at hand. “I am not thinking about it (getting into the Indian team). India’s next tour (England in July) is far away. I want to live in the present and hope to do well in the IPL,” said Gambhir at a promotional event here on Tuesday.
About his recent sparkling performances, Gambhir said, playing Ranji matches on green top tracks of the Roshanara Ground helped.
“When you play in those conditions and then you go to batsman-friendly tracks, you become aggressive. I will give credit to playing on difficult wickets.”
Gambhir was thrilled to have two potent weapons — South African paceman Morne Morkel and West Indian spinner Sunil Narine — in KKR’s armoury.
Gambhir defended old friend Yuvraj Singh, who invited criticism for his slow batting during India’s loss to Sri Lanka in the World T20 final on Sunday. “It is a team game and it is wrong to single out Yuvraj. “Yuvraj is India’s greatest match-winner. He made a 60 against Australia the other day. Even today he is a big player and will win matches for India in future,” said Gambhir.
