Tyre manufacturer MRF Ltd., the official blimp sponsor of IPL 2010, will have the MRF Blimp on display during matches at Mumbai, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Bangalore and Cuttack.
The blimp is 19 metres long, contains upto 400 cubic metres of pure helium and can be raised to a maximum height of 1000 feet. Once in the air at 300 metres height, it can withstand wind velocity of upto 40 knots during a storm.
Once the blimp is launched, the weather is continuously monitored via telemetry incorporated into the blimp payload as well as tension in the tether line which links the blimp to the trailer on the ground.
According to a press release from MRF, this is the first time that a blimp is being deployed for a sporting event.
