Virat Kohli was on Wednesday named the new captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore, replacing New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori. The appointment does not come as a surprise with Kohli, seen as a future captain for some time now, having led the side 10 times in the last two IPL seasons.

“It’s a great feeling. [From] being drafted as an under-19 player in 2008 to being considered to lead the side... is a big honour,” the 24-year-old was quoted as saying in a press release.

The only player retained by the franchise ahead of the 2011 season, Kohli is the longest-serving member of the RCB squad. “We are delighted to announce Virat as our captain. His hunger to learn, lead, motivate and set an example is unquestionable,” team owner Vijay Mallya said.
