India coach Gary Kirsten walked up to match referee Andy Pycroft's room soon after the controversial dismissal of Murali Vijay on the fourth day of the third Test here on Friday.
He spoke to both Mr. Pycroft and third umpire Kumar Dharmasena on the Indian opener being adjudged caught at backward short-leg by Mahela Jayawardene even after the television replays proved inconclusive on the legality of the catch.
Confirming this to The Hindu , Indian team manager Ranjib Biswal said: “Yes, Gary (Kirsten) did speak to both Pycroft and Dharmasena after Vijay's dismissal. He went there because the television replays were not conclusive. However, we have not lodged a protest.”
Umpire Simon Taufel had referred the decision to the third umpire since there were doubts whether Mahela had taken the catch cleanly. It was surprising that the television replays of action so close to the bat in a Test match could not throw more light on the veracity of a catch.
