Queensland batsman Joseph Burns has been included in the 13-member Australian squad for the third Test against India, beginning in Melbourne from December 26.

Burns comes in for pace-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who is recovering from a hamstring injury.

The 25-year-old Burns has been in impressive form this season with 439 runs, including an innings of 183 against New South Wales, at 54.87.

In all, he has 2978 runs from 45 first class matches at 42.54 with seven centuries.

Someone who has both opened and batted in the middle-order, the right-handed Burns has beaten challenges from Ed Cowan and Adam Voges.

Siddle retained

Senior paceman Peter Siddle, who did not figure in the eleven at the Gabba, has been retained.

The Australian selectors are also convinced that David Warner’s thumb injury is not serious. Paceman Ryan Harris is recovering well from a strain in his quadriceps.

Australia fined

Australia has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate and Indian paceman Ishant Sharma has been found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the Brisbane Test.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the fine on Australia after Steve Smith’s side was ruled to be three overs short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.5.1, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

Smith has been fined 60 per cent of his match fee, while his players have received 30 per cent fines.

If Smith is found guilty of one more minor over-rate offence as captain in Tests over the next 12 months, he will receive a one-match suspension as per the provisions of the Code.

Ishant, who admitted to the offence, has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for violating Level 1 Article 2.1.4, which relates to language or gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting.

The incident happened in the Australian first innings when Ishant was seen on television screens using inappropriate words after dismissing Australia captain Smith.

Australia squad for third Test: Steven Smith (capt.), David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
