Rauf left without collecting bookies’ gifts

May 25, 2013 11:56 pm | Updated June 08, 2016 07:48 am IST - MUMBAI:

After the betting scandal broke, Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf left India in such haste that he did not even collect two bags of gifts sent to him by bookies.

The gifts, which include jeans worth Rs. 25,000, watches and shirts, were supposed to have been delivered to him at his hotel room in Delhi.

The Mumbai Crime Branch, which took possession of the bags late on Friday night, is yet to decide whether to make Mr. Rauf an accused in the case. It, however, is investigating his role through interrogation of actor Vindoo Dara Singh and Gurunath Meiyappan.

In their remand copy, submitted to the court on Friday, the police made it clear that they will probe Mr. Meiyappan’s relations with Mr. Rauf.

“It was Singh who tipped off Rauf, after which he ran away. We have also found that when Rauf was in Mumbai, his hotel bills were paid by bookies such as Sunil Jaipur and Pawan Jaipur,” an officer said.
