The Board of Control for Cricket in India must take responsibility for its role in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting scandal, the Bharatiya Janata Party said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters here, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the governing body should own up to its role in this shameful episode and come clean.

“They cannot escape from it. The public that considers cricket a religion has been betrayed by this scandal,” he said, demanding that the BCCI take stern action against players and top honchos in the administration involved in spot-fixing.

Slamming BCCI chief N. Srinivasan’s statement that the board was a private entity, Mr. Javadekar asked if that was the case, then how could the organisation claim to represent the country?
