Fearlessness, freedom and relaxation. Angelo Mathews values a set-up that can provide these gifts to him. The Sri Lankan all-rounder, through his experience with leadership, has come to appreciate the importance of the culture nurtured at Delhi Daredevils. The atmosphere around the team has led to a refreshed approach within.
“I’m loving it. From the owners, to the coaching staff, to the captain, they have created an environment where we can play with a free hand. Our minds are free and we’re not pressurised.
This is a high intensity game and it takes a lot out of your body. So, the coaches are being supportive,” the 27-year-old told The Hindu .
Coach Gary Kirsten and Duminy deserve credit for creating positive vibes in the dressing room, added Mathews. “Gary has done a brilliant job. He’s a coach who backs the players and gives freedom to them. He understands the players and their capacities.
“He's willing to learn. So it has been great to work with Gary. I'm really thankful that he has created a culture where the team will go and play fearless cricket.”
Mathews also believes that the atmosphere of freedom is bred by owners who understand the challenges of Twenty20 cricket. And the positive mood lends special benefits to young players. As an experienced cricketer, Mathews is mindful of playing his off-field role as well as he can.
“If you play or not, it doesn't really matter as long as you are having a good time with the boys. It's all about learning and sharing your experiences with the younger guys.
“I've seen some brilliant youngsters coming up in Daredevils. And I've shared the dressing room with so many greats, the cream of international players.”
On the field, Mathews recognises that he's expected to contribute significantly with the bat and the ball. His performances in the IPL this season have shown that his fine run of form in international cricket has been carried into this tournament.
