The Indian Premier League (IPL), on Friday, directed the franchises not to deal with agents in the process of selecting new players.
According to an IPL release, cricket boards have complained that some agents have been misguiding players and franchises to the detriment of global cricket.
“This (agents misguiding players and franchises) was against the fundamental vision and structure of the league which was to enhance cricket and provide more opportunities while not detracting in any manner from International Cricket,” said Lalit Modi, Chairman and Commissioner, IPL. He has asked players to seek clarifications from him directly.
The IPL has also asked the franchises to re-register all player contracts (international stars auctioned, domestic players, replacement and/or development cricketers) and contracting of young and new players in order to update the player registry. The IPL has set a deadline of August 25 for the franchises to re-register all players.
Reiterating its commitment to the International Cricket Council’s Future Tour Programme (FTP), the IPL has made it mandatory that every IPL player who is contracted by any board, club, county, province anywhere in the world should produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for a period of two years.
This rule is applicable to retired players and also those not contracted with their home boards. The IPL, on Thursday, informed all the cricket boards, that if a cricketer does not play for his country in an approved FTP tournament, choosing instead to play for a franchise in the league, the IPL would not allow the player to participate in the competition.
Finally, the IPL has said it would not recognise contracts which are not as per the prescribed guidelines. It has taken this decision following complaints from multiple quarters that individual franchises were tweaking the terms of conditions of signing-up young and new players as per their convenience.
