The Crime Branch CID of the Tamil Nadu police may chargesheet a senior police official of the Tamil Nadu cadre, accusing him of forcing a couple of bookies involved in the IPL betting scam to pay a huge sums of money as bribe, agency sources said on Tuesday.
With investigation almost complete, the CBCID will seek to access documents perused by the Justice Mudgal Committee that probed allegations of betting and match fixing in the IPL. The committee said on Monday that the charges against Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI president N. Srinivasan, that he indulged in betting and passed on information were proven.
According to a top police official, the CBCID which examined Mr. Meiyappan, city-based hotelier Vikram Agarwal and Kitty alias Utham Jain had sent copies of their interrogation reports to the Mudgal Committee well in advance. “The role of Mr. Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings and his involvement with bookie Vindoo Dara Singh are not part of our investigation…,” he said.
The official said the evidence available with the CBCID, including call records of the accused, was shared with Mudgal committee. When his attention was drawn to reports that the CBCID had not found anything incriminating against Mr. Meiyappan, he said the findings of the Mudgal Committee would be taken into account before filing charge sheet.
He said the CBCID had gathered adequate evidence in a separate case against a senior police official who demanded huge sums from a couple of bookies. Rs. 60 lakh was recovered from three persons assigned to make the payment.
