Northern Knights, bereft of batting armour, stood exposed to the point of the lance. Blown away by Hobart Hurricanes’ battery of seamers, the Kiwi squad, hitherto undefeated, wilted at 92 in response to its trans-Tasman opponent’s 178 for three in the Oppo Champions League Twenty20 here on Tuesday night.

CSK’s loss may well become Hurricanes’ gain, as Ben Hilfenhaus (three for 14) triggered a top-order collapse.

Devcich was first to depart, his thick edge off Joe Mennie pounced on by point Ben Laughlin. CLT20’s fastest century-maker Kane Williamson’s inside-out drive off Hilfenhaus ballooned to mid-off Doherty.

The full-blooded Tasmanian then moved the ball through the air and off the seam to castle Daniel Flynn, bowling the Knights’ skipper neck and crop.

The middle-order would prove as brittle as its forerunners, as B-J. Watling was trapped in front, the third of Hilfenhaus’s victims in the four overs he bowled on the trot.

The last semblance of resistance came from Scott Styris (37, 27b, 4x4, 1x6).

The veteran weathered the storm with a fair measure of assurance.

After the Knights chose to bowl, the Boult-Southee duet bottled up Hurrianes’ openers Dunk and Paine, whizzing past the blade quite a few times.

There was no let-up from Styris and Kuggeleijn either, the latter squeezing out a skier from Dunk that Southee at mid-on made no mistake with.

The batting came into its own after Blizzard joined Paine, the pair pushing up the score and run-rate. With six-and-a-half dozen boundaries behind him, Paine hoisted Sodhi but fell short at long-off, Trent Boult doing the needful.

Malik (45 not out), put the sub-continent’s traditional strength with spin to good use, lofting the leggie over the ropes early. Blizzard’s record of scoring half centuries in less than 40 balls remained intact, this one coming off 39.
