Two wins in his first two matches as skipper, and a blistering century to set up the second victory — Gautam Gambhir couldn't have conceived a better start to his captaincy. What pleased Gambhir most was his presence at the crease as India moved 2-0 ahead.
“As a captain, scoring your first 100 is always special but finishing the game is far more pleasing than scoring a century and then getting out,” he said, addressing the media after the game.
However, the opener said taking over the job full-time from M.S. Dhoni at some point wasn't on his radar just yet. “I think MS has done a much better job. He has taken this team to another level,” he said.
“Whatever responsibility has been given to me I want to discharge it to the best of my ability rather than thinking I am going to be the future captain. Right now MS is the best man to lead the side.”
New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said he felt his team had posted a competitive score, but his bowlers didn't bowl well enough. “We gave width to Gambhir all day and he made us pay,” he said. “It was one of the best one-day innings I've seen.”
Asked about the status of Brendon McCullum's back spasms, Vettori said, “We are taking it day by day. He's improving and we will wait on his fitness.”
Referring to his side's eighth straight ODI defeat, Vettori said he'd prefer to look ahead to the rest of the series. “We can't get caught up in history.”
