Graeme Swann removed last batsman Naeem Islam to finish with a 10-wicket match haul as England beat Bangladesh by 181 runs on Tuesday in the first Test.
Swann took five wickets in each innings. And he led an England attack which struggled in the morning session on the last day against a rearguard action by Junaide Suddique, who posted his maiden Test hundred, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who just missed his second Test century when he was out for 95.
The pair added 167 in a defiant sixth-wicket stand to stall England’s victory charge after Alastair Cook declared the tourist’s second innings on Monday, setting Bangladesh an improbable 513 to win.
After reaching lunch at 277-5 without losing a wicket on the final morning - with Siddique on 106 and Rahim on 91 - Bangladesh was all out for 331 before tea.
Swann had 5-127 from 49 overs in the second innings - including 3-48 in his last 14-over spell - and Tim Bresnan took 3-36.
Siddique’s century came off 263 balls and included 16 boundaries and held the Bangladesh batting together until he played forward to Swann soon after the lunch interval and edged to Paul Collingwood at slip. Swann also bowled Rahim and had Islam (36) caught by Michael Carberry at midwicket.
Stuart Broad trapped Abdur Razzak (1) lbw, while Bresnan had tailender Shahadat Hossain caught behind.
England controlled the match after scoring 599 for six declared in the first innings, with Cook and Collingwood both contributing centuries, and restricting Bangladesh’s first innings to 296.
