Rahul Dravid, the team-man, said getting to 11,000 Test runs when the side needed a big innings from him was extremely satisfying.
The ace Indian batsman said he had no pre-conceived notions about how he would bat while walking in. Dravid often took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers during his unbeaten 177 on the opening day of the first Test here on Monday.
“It was important that we had a partnership going. That did not happen for us against South Africa here the last time. I told Yuvraj that we should not lose another wicket till lunch. That was crucial. We could then consolidate,” he said.
The former Indian captain gave credit to Yuvraj and Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the manner in which they batted. “I must say they went about their jobs very well. It was a team effort,” he said. During his innings, skipper Dhoni completed 2000 runs in Test cricket.
Dravid conceded he had gone through some rough times over the last year. “I am happy with the way I am batting. I think I am in control of my game now.”
He admitted that his stint for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy this season had enabled him get into the groove. Dravid made crucial runs against Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in conditions favouring pacemen.
The batsman from Karnataka was mildly surprised that Ajantha Mendis was not a part of the Sri Lankan eleven. “He has done well against us in the past. But (Rangana) Herath has impressed for Sri Lanka in recent times.”
Looking ahead in the Test, Dravid said the pitch should continue to play well for a couple of more days. “It was a good toss for us to win. I think we should be looking to get close to 500. We need to build some more partnerships.”
