Dhoni in line for top ICC awards

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been nominated in three categories at the LG ICC awards 2009.

The India captain is in the shortlist for the ODI Player of the Year 2008, Test Player of the Year and Cricketer of the Year. The Sri Lankan’s name figures among nominees for T20 International Performance of the Year, Test Player of the Year and Cricketer of the Year.

Ceremony on October 1

The annual awards, presented by ICC in association with the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA), will be given away on October 1 in Johannesburg, coinciding with the Champions Trophy 2009.

The nominations list was prepared by a five-man ICC selection panel headed by Clive Lloyd. Anil Kumble, Mudassar Nazar, Stephen Fleming and Bob Taylor are other four on the panel.

Apart from this group, 25 personalities connected with cricket, including former players, umpires, match referees, cricket writers choose the individual player awards.

According to ICC Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, there is a scope for wildcard entry and an outstanding performer outside the nominees listed by the five-member panel can be included by the 25-member group.

Gambhir, Harbhajan nominated twice

Apart from Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh figure in the individuals shortlisted for ICC Cricketer of the Year.

The other Indians nominated are Gambhir, V.V.S. Laxman, Harbhajan (Test Player of Year); Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag (ODI Player); Amit Mishra (Emerging Player) and Mithali Raj, Priyanka Roy (Women Cricketer).
