Barely 24 hours after checking into its hotel after a trans-continental flight, the West Indies ‘A’ team had its first training session that lasted three hours at the KSCA (B) Ground here on Friday.
The squad, with the exception of vice-captain Veerasammy Permaul, limbered up and practised ahead of its limited-overs contests against India ‘A’ with the first one-dayer scheduled to be held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday.
Miguel Cummins, whose 35 wickets at 14.77 helped Barbados win the regional four-day tournament back home in the Caribbean, is one among the junior crop that is eager to make a mark. In a brief chat with the media, the 23-year old spoke about making a good beginning though he remained wary of Indian batsmen and the pitches down here.
Excerpts:
The training files: “The Jet-lag is over and we have begun our preparations for the Sunday’s game. Hoping for a good outing.”
The opposition: “It (India ‘A’) is a very strong team; batting is very strong and has very good bowlers. We have to play well.”
Individual goals: “To bowl well and get wickets for the team. Perform well.”
Pitching it right: “The practice wickets look good, a good wicket to bat on. The bowlers can get something out of these practice wickets. The main (match) pitch looks green but I am sure some of it (grass) will come off. If the pitch is like the one here at practice, then it will be a good wicket.”
