England women outplay India

Skipper Charlotte Edwards (57) and Heather Knight (53) helped England women outplay India by 42 runs, via Duckworth-Lewis method, in the rain-hit first ODI on Thursday.

Chasing a revised target of 184 in 42 overs, England was 153 for three in 30.1 overs when rain intervened one final time and the host was well above the D-L target of 112 in 30.1 overs as it took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Smriti comes good Earlier, asked to bat, India rode on opener Smriti Mandhana’s 74 to post 193 for eight.

Skipper Mithali Raj contributed 34, while V. Vanitha (27) and debutant Shikha Pandey (21 not out) were the others to reach double figures.

The second ODI will be played on Saturday.
