Chanderpaul, Powell power West Indies

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Kieran Powell smashed centuries to guide West Indies to 361-4 against Bangladesh at stumps on the opening day on Tuesday of the first Test.

After the loss of three wickets in the morning session, West Indies steadied its innings in the second session without conceding any wickets as Powell collected 115 while Chanderpaul added 46.

In the second over after tea, Powell was dismissed on 117 by Bangladesh off-spinner Sohag Gazi, who also claimed Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo.

But Chanderpaul continued, and reached 123 off 195 balls and was unbeaten at stumps. Denesh Ramdin was also unbeaten on 52.

Gazi’s bowling figures stood at 3-97.
