Tino Best claimed five wickets, Veerasammy Permaul took three and Ravi Rampaul added two to help the West Indies clinch the first test against Bangladesh by 77 runs at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.

Bangladesh needed 245 runs to win the game, but they were dismissed for 167 well ahead of the scheduled stumps after the collapse of its top and middle order.

Mahmudullah was the high scorer with 29 for Bangladesh.

Best returned bowling figures of 5-24, while Permaul took 3-32. Ravi Rampaul chipped in with 2-32.

Bangladesh was in trouble after it reached 45-2 at lunch. The side lost five more wickets for 129 runs, still 116 runs short of the target.

The defeat cost Bangladesh an opportunity to confirm its fourth test win since becoming a test-playing nation 12 years ago.

After the top-order collapsed cheaply, Naeem Islam and Nasir Hossain failed in their attempt to steady the innings.

Best dismissed Shahriat Nafees (23), Shakib Al Hasan (2), Mushfiqur Rahim (16). In the final session he took Mahmudullah, the final wicket of the day, to end the Bangladesh innings. Earlier he had Junaid Siddique for 20.

Permaul took the wickets of Islam for 26, Nasir Hossain (21) and Sohag Gazi (19).

Opener Tamim Iqbal was the first man to go for 5, dismissed by Rampaul.

Earlier, Gazi claimed six wickets in his test debut as the West Indies was bundled out for 273 with a 244-run lead before lunch.

The West Indies struggled after resuming on the overnight score of 244-6 and lost its remaining four wickets in quick succession to Gazi (6-74), who conceded only 11 runs.

The 21-year-old Gazi first claimed skipper Darren Sammy for 16 then bowled Rampaul for 5 and Best for a duck with the West Indies on 265-9. His final delivery of the day trapped Shivnarine Chanderpaul lbw for 1 to end the West Indies’ innings.

Gazi took 3-145 in the first innings.
