The Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and home ministry officials have told the BCCI that the government cannot provide security for IPL-VII, scheduled to be held during April-May, because of the general elections.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Pael and Rajiv Shukla, vice-president, BCCI and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning, met Mr. Shinde and other ministry officials in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. “They were very categorical that security cannot be spared during the elections. We are reviewing the situation and moving accordingly,” said a BCCI source.

Recently, top BCCI and IPL officials had hinted at South Africa being the alternative venue for a major part of this year’s IPL.
