Apart from its move to recommend the inclusion of a Pakistan team in Champions League twenty20, the BCCI made a number of other decisions in its working committee meeting here on Saturday.
Prominent among them was the decision to make a one-time benefit payment to cricketers who have retired before 2003-04 in recognition of their services to Indian cricket at international and domestic levels.
Around 160 cricketers are eligible for this payment – made from IPL surplus - that would amount to Rs. 70 crores approx.
Cricketers who have played 100 or more Tests will get Rs. 1.5 crores. This illustrious list will include Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Dilip Vengsarkar. Those with 75-99 Tests will receive Rs. One crore.
BCCI president Mr. N. Srinivasan said, “I would like to say that from the proceeds of the playoff games of the IPL, the BCCI will give a one-time benefit to those (players) who have graced Indian cricket — international as well as those who have played domestic cricket for a long time. This is a small thank you to those who have done yeoman service to Indian cricket.”
The Board working committee has also approved a proposal to allow IPL franchises to play a limited number of friendly matches in ICC Associate and Affiliate countries between June and August.
These games will be subject to guidelines laid down by the Board at a later date.
The move will enable the franchises to have greater visibility after the conclusion of the IPL season. It will also generate more revenue for the teams.
The Board also ratified the grant of media rights to Star India Pvt. Ltd for the next six years – from 2012 to 2018.
The Working Committee approved the nomination of Mr. N. Srinivasan, president, BCCI, as the next president of the Asian Cricket Council, as per rotation.
Srinivasan also said the Indian cricketers might be allowed by the BCCI to take part in the Sri Lankan Premier League, beginning in August.
He said, “Last time around, there were specific reasons why the BCCI could not support the tournament. We informed the Sri Lankan board at that time. This time, if there are any proposals made, we will examine it. And we have to be satisfied that the doubts and problems we had last time will not continue.”
Sporting tracks
A setting up of an anti-corruption arm of the BCCI was also approved. This unit would oversee domestic matches.
The working committee also gave its approval to a Curator's Certificate course; the first batch will begin in July 2012. The BCCI is keen to prepare sporting tracks for domestic matches.
And a special panel will look into the suggestions made by the technical committees, the captains and the coaches.
Then, the committee will make its final recommendations to the BCCI vis-a-vis improvements that can be made to domestic cricket.
List of eligibility for BCCI's one time benefit payment to cricketers, who have retired before 2003-04: 1: Cricketers who have played 100 or more Tests: Rs. 1.5 crores. 2. 75-99 Tests: Rs. 1 crore. 3. 50-74 Tests: Rs. 75 lakhs. 4. 25-49 Tests: Rs. 60 lakhs. 5. 10-24 Tests: Rs. 50 lakhs. 6. Cricketers who have played between 1 and 9 Tests and who have played their last international match before 1970: Rs. 35 lakhs. 7. 100 or more first class matches: Rs. 30 lakhs. 8. 75-99 first class matches: Rs. 25 lakhs.
